The pupils at M'S Xavier International School benefit greatly from the library classes conducted in the primary classes. These classes not only provide the students with knowledge but also help them develop important skills that make them independent learners. The library classes follow a step-up technique, where the books given to the students are based on their skill level and the knowledge they have gained in previous classes.
In each level, the students are issued 40 to 50 different storybooks. Every week, each section of 40 pupils enjoys one library period. The book covers a wide range of topics, including human values, moral values, ethical values, detective stories, informative books on science, social science, and other subjects, comics, mythological stories, encyclopedias, and autobiographies.
In levels 1 and 2, the children are given short story books that use simple language and depict stories through animals. During some library periods, the students get a chance to narrate the stories they have read, while in others, the teacher narrates the stories and shows related pictures.
In levels 3 and 4, the library period is conducted in different ways. Firstly, the children are given the opportunity to choose books from a selection, and they exchange them with each other after reading. They are then allowed to discuss the story and express their views about it. Secondly, the class is divided into two groups, with each group receiving 20 to 25 copies of the same books. These sets are then exchanged with the other group in the following weeks. Lastly, the entire class is given 40 to 50 copies of different books. At the end of the session, the children's comprehension is tested through questions, encouraging their active participation.
The library classes also incorporate various techniques to engage the children in reading habits and assess their comprehension levels. Role play is one such method used, where the students act out scenes from the books they have read. Additionally, the students utilize dictionaries to find the meanings of words, and they also play word games and crossword puzzles during the library period.
The middle school library section contains around 10,000 books authored by different writers, in addition to reference books.
There are approximately 6,000 books available in the high school library, covering a wide range of genres such as storybooks, novels, biographies, encyclopedias, self-help books, quiz-related books, arts and crafts, sports, scouts and guides, mythology, as well as general and reference books. Additionally, the library subscribes to six newspapers (English and Kannada) and various magazines like Tell Me Why, Down to Earth, Science Reporter, Wisdom, Digital Learning, Chandamama, India Today, and others in regional languages.
Subject books from different authors and publishers are provided to help students gather more information, along with previous years' question papers. These, along with reference books, can be photocopied within the school premises.
The library offers books for different reading levels, from short and simple books for beginners to novels for advanced readers. It features works by a variety of Indian and foreign authors, such as R.K. Narayan, R.K. Laxman, Anita Desai, Chetan Bhagat, J.K. Rowling, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Alistair Maclean, Charles Dickens, Jeffrey Archer, John Grisham, Rick Riordan, Arthur Hailey, Cornelia Funke, and many others.
Students are assisted in selecting general and subject books, as well as gathering information for their projects, competitions, and assembly topics. Those interested can also provide book reviews, with the best ones receiving prizes.
